About Professional Learning

Under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, education should prepare every child for responsible life in a free society, in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equality and friendship among all people and groups, regardless of their background (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 29).

These principles directly align with both the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) and the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) notions of identity, wellbeing and belonging and compel educators to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to developing their own cultural competence and to ensure their pedagogy respects multiple cultural ways of being and an understanding and admiration of difference.

fka Children’s Services (fkaCS) provides professional learning to support educators to apply critical reflection and thinking to their practice at:

  • The relationship level, with families and children, to ensure respectful, responsive and trusting relationships to support a sense of belonging.
  • The curriculum level to ensure each child is supported to participate in the program, exercise agency and develop confidence as learners, strong in their identity and connectedness to community.
  • A personal level to explore their own world view and enhance positive attitudes to differences.
  • The service level (e.g. policies) to ensure inclusion and equity.

All fkaCS Professional Learning is underpinned by Approved Early Learning Frameworks and directly links the National Quality Standard.

For Early Childhood Educators maintaining registration with Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), fkaCS professional learning may be referenced to the following descriptors within the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:

  • Develop teaching activities that incorporate differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of learners across the full range of abilities. (Descriptor 1.5)
  • Establish and implement inclusive and positive interactions to engage and support all learners in learning activities. (Descriptor 4.1)
